Why is this helpful?

Some people may wonder how movement and breathing can help improve your mental health or how it heals trauma. In short, when we don’t release old energy it becomes stuck. When energetic sensations keep recurring in the body, we may ask ourselves if there is old energy that needs to be released: this can be done both verbally and physically. The longer we store this energy in our bodies, the more intense these sensations tend to be over time.

Our autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates the internal organs in our body such as your stomach, heart, and lungs. Within the ANS are two branches or subsystems:

  1. Sympathetic Nervous System ~ which can be referred to as our accelerator. It is the group of neurons that mobilize our fight or flight response and prepare the body to react to something in our environment.

  2. Parasympathetic Nervous System ~ which can be referred to as our brake. It is the group of neurons that regulate bodily function when a person is at rest, and is responsible for emotional and physical deceleration.

The vagus nerve ~ supplies parasympathetic information to the visceral organs. This nerve circuit can trigger shut down during a traumatic event.

Cognitive functioning and the prefrontal cortex of our brains control reasoning and problem solving. This is why CBT and DBT can be very useful when helping individuals change their reactions, behaviors, and thinking patterns. However, when our body is triggered and experiences sudden physiological changes due to our environment, it is very hard to access the reasoning part of our brain (prefrontal cortex) due to our nervous system’s defense strategy.

The reason for incorporating the use of somatic exercises, breath work, dance and movement into the therapeutic process is to help individuals when they experience triggering symptoms in real-time. Healing from trauma, coping with anxiety, or navigating the highs and lows of day-to-day living can feel like an endless cycle at times. Learning how to release what no longer serves you while growing a deeper connection to your body, will hopefully create a more meaningful and intentional way of living.
